Character: Uchiha Itachi
Fandom: Naruto

Personality: It is important to note that the most fundamental part of Itachi's personality stems from the love he has for his younger brother, Sasuke. It was evident in itself by the trials and tribulations he suffered through while growing up that he was quite willing to endure anything for Sasuke, even death itself. However, that is not all there is (or was) to Itachi, and in fact only begins to skim the surface. Having never possessed a great love for his clan, and thereby having never possessed a great love of himself, Itachi was from the very beginning a pawn being manipulated by deadly men with wrongful intentions in mind. His existence and purpose as a whole was transformed by the hostilities between Konoha and the Uchiha, and while he allowed himself for the longest time to be moved about like a useful, but disposable piece in a game of shogi, he was always plotting behind the scenes aiming to achieve what was right in the end, by whatever means necessary.

Although bloodshed was imminent in a world full of shinobi, Itachi had decided at an usually early age that he did not wish to be an irrespective contributor to unnecessary violence. This decision was not born from any desire to become a martyr, even if it ultimately led to his becoming just that, but rather it was born from watching countless innocents die while being witness to plots foreshadowing more death and further oppression. Itachi saw in himself the ability to put to rest the corruption of his own clan once and for all, and he saw in himself the ability to withstand the repercussions of being seen as a traitor by doing so. His worth, as far as he is concerned, is measured not by his formidable talent, even though he has claimed it was so countless times, but rather it is measured by his ability to uphold honor and protect that which he loves and holds dear. Beyond that, Itachi has very little sense of self because he was never permitted the chance to blossom on his own, into anything more than the weapon he remained until his death.

In the eyes of those that do not know Itachi very well or are unable to see through the clever lies he's told his whole life, Itachi appears to be aloof, merciless, and out only for himself. The facade in which he wears is seamless, impossible to see through, and one that he has worn for so long it has become something of a second skin. Despite a blatant show of reluctance when approached with confrontation of any kind, he is still often seen only as the wanted S-ranked criminal that he became, and not the collected, compassionate person in whom he truly is. Albeit his criminal status, Itachi is still revered by many as a timeless talent and formidable opponent, and with good reason. He has been known to end quickly and brutally any fight that is inescapable, and by any means necessary. To the end Itachi also hid his illness, one that had been causing him to deteriorate rapidly. Always he was skilled at hiding the truth, and the nature of his health was no exception, perhaps because showing any weakness and being treated as a liability was something he could not bear. Always composed, quiet, and regarding with careful consideration the world around him, Itachi possesses a talent for (not in the ability of his doujutsu alone, but a natural skill in) making others believe whatever it is he wants them to.

There are few that Itachi allows to get close to him, and fewer still that know his true self, but it can be said he is particularly close to his partner, Kisame. After having spent a decade fighting along side the Kirigakure shinobi, however, it would be near to impossible not to have formed some bond, and as such, the two express respect for one another freely. Toward the other members of Akatsuki Itachi is also polite and respectful, though not always is his formal regard returned. Be that as it may, he holds no grudges against them, though he remains mindful and cautious of Madara, and it can be said he was that way to his last, and even beyond the grave. Last but not least is his relationship with Sasuke, utterly twisted and complicated, and forged heavily of lies and seeming betrayals. Itachi loves Sasuke more than anything, however, including himself, but in order to protect his brother, was willing to live a life of treachery and Sasuke hating him. After a fashion these bonds and those formerly held (to Konoha) are all representative of extreme loyalty and a deeply rooted sense of honor.

Despite his goal for peace and Sasuke's safety, Itachi was, however, willing to commit truly dehumanizing and monstrous acts, so long as the end result justified the means. Be it torturing the one he loved most, or slaughtering his family, it didn't matter so long as the good outweighed the bad. Never inherently selfish, and certainly not evil, he still worked himself into the ground (literally) in order to stay one step ahead of the game, creating failsafe after failsafe for Sasuke before his death, and enacting plans that would continue to be in effect well after. Those around him constantly underestimated him, even if they realized how dangerous he could be, and Itachi played this to his advantage all the way until his death at his brother's hands.

History: Born into the Uchiha Clan, Itachi was expected from the very beginning to be exceptional, and even during the tender years of his adolescence, he proved to be just that. It wasn't until later on that he would become praised as the best of a generation, however, a genius that out shined all others. Before he was to meet with that renown he was to witness and endure countless lives lost in what was known as the Third Great Shinobi World War. This helped shape his beliefs and personality well before either of his parents could completely influence him. It also served as a mental and emotional scar that Itachi would never be able to shake, transforming him into a pacifist at a very early age.

Despite his peace-loving nature, hostility and hatred were brewing all around him. There was no allowance for childhood luxury in his case, and with each step forward he took, Itachi became a little stronger, and a little more difficult to understand. At the age of seven, and after only one year at the top of his class, Itachi graduated the shinobi academy, becoming a full fledged ninja. His Sharingan, a bloodline limit hereditary to the Uchiha Clan, was mastered by the age of eight. He graduated from genin to chuunin, passing the preliminary and concluding exams by the time he was ten, and when he was thirteen he became an ANBU captain.

Praised and encouraged endlessly by his father, the future of the clan soon came to rest upon Itachi's shoulders. Fugaku saw immeasurable talent and potential in his eldest son and relentlessly pushed Itachi to keep doing better. So much of his attention was given to him that in doing so he was thereby neglecting his youngest child, Itachi's little brother, Sasuke. This behavior, of course, Itachi could only allow to go on for so long, because Sasuke was important to him, and at the time he showed a great deal of affection toward his little brother. He went so far as to offer his father an ultimatum one day, making it clear that he would not attend the upcoming clan meeting or participate in the upcoming mission if Fugaku did not go to Sasuke's school and show some interest in his endeavors. Fugaku, of course, agreed.

It wasn't until the Uchiha had begun planning to overthrow the elders of Konoha and the village itself that things had really begun to change, however. As an ANBU captain, the Uchiha placed the task of spying and reporting back the activities of the village and its officials in Itachi's hands. Knowing that a coup d'etat would lead only to another mass war, Itachi instead began spying on his own clan, passing along whatever information he could glean to the Third Hokage and the village elders. It was only a matter of time before the Uchiha began to suspect something, and suspicions only grew when he began shirking clan meetings, spoke out against the clan, and even became the prime suspect of the murder of his best friend, Shisui Uchiha, who had, at the time, been ordered to spy on Itachi.

No longer someone the clan could trust, their hopes in Itachi dwindled, and Itachi's own father began to shift his attention toward Sasuke.

Meanwhile, the Third Hokage's attempts at negotiating a bloodless end to the hostilities between the Uchiha and Konoha were proving ineffective. Against the Third's wishes, Danzo and the Konoha Council contacted Itachi and gave him the order to end once and for all the Uchiha's rebellion. It was ordered for Itachi to wipe out the clan.

Shortly before that fateful night was to come to a conclusion, after discovering Madara Uchiha's existence and realizing his war-bound intentions, Itachi struck a deal with the man in attempts to spare Konoha further unnecessary bloodshed. Agreeing to help Madara obtain his revenge against the Uchiha for turning their backs on him decades earlier, Itachi slaughtered his entire clan overnight, sparing only the life of Sasuke. Sasuke proved to be invaluable to Itachi, too important, and closer to his heart than Konoha itself. He could not follow through on the orders to kill Sasuke as well, and in doing so, made himself out to be the villain that had ruthlessly murdered their innocent family, only to test his abilities. It was Itachi's goal in doing so to convince Sasuke to seek vengeance and redeem the Uchiha name, thereby making him a hero, and protecting him. He tortured Sasuke with the Mangekyou Sharingan, taunted him and told him to become stronger if he wanted revenge. He told Sasuke to run and cling to life, and to come before him one day when they had the same eyes. Now a traitor, Itachi left the village.

Despite the great lengths that he had already gone to in order to ensure Sasuke's well-being, Itachi went two steps further to secure his brother's life. The first was to threaten the Third Hokage, Danzo, and the Konoha Council by promising to go to enemy countries and reveal Konoha secrets if they moved against Sasuke. The second was to join Akatsuki and keep an eye on Madara Uchiha in order to prevent him from moving against Konoha. All that was left thereafter was to prepare for the years to come, and his death by Sasuke's hands.

Appearance: Here is a link to a canon image of Itachi.

Itachi stands at 5'10" and weighs approximately 127 lbs. His skin is fair and free of blemishes or scars; it is unknown as to whether or not he possesses the tribal shaped ANBU tattoo, as Itachi prefers conservative dress and usually keeps his arms covered to his elbows. His hair is black and long, often tied back into a low ponytail, chin length wispy bangs framing an oval shaped face. Ordinarily Itachi's eyes are a soft charcoal black, but when his Sharingan is activated, they become a bright crimson marked with a black tri-flecked pattern. Itachi's Mangekyou Sharingan maintains the same crimson color, but the tri-flecked patter transforms into a jagged-edged spiral, similar in shape to that of a shuriken. Beneath his eyes are dark lines, one of Itachi's only truly distinguishing features.

Beneath the black Akatsuki cloak decorated with symbolic red clouds Itachi wears an off-color black nylon shirt with a low, pointed collar, and a fishnet shirt beneath that. Dark trousers of a close match in color to his shirt are also worn, white cloth wraps worn over them just below the knee, fitting tightly beneath the arch of a standard pair of shinobi sandals. His nails are painted a basic purple shade, like most Akatsuki members, and he wears his Akatsuki ring upon his right ring finger.
